Under Pressure The Story – Part 1: Selection

Part 1: The Selection

Sioux Falls is the biggest town in the state of South Dakota and it appeals to many Americans. It is the fastest growing city in the Midwest with an increase of 22% since 2000. Which isn’t surprising.  Sioux Falls has positioned itself as the cultural center of the State. Besides this the numerous waterfalls have a magical force of attraction on both inhabitants as on tourists.

The Sioux Falls Park has been well developed around the waterfalls of Sioux Falls of which the town has inherited its name. Despite the fact that the waterfalls aren’t very high they are extremely picturesque! The worn out layers of red rocks are extraordinary and the tower offers a spectacular view. At night one can visit and admire a sound and light spectacle highlighting the waterfalls.

For us and until last year all of this was a distant and strange town of which I only knew that there was a contest in order to take part in an open air exhibition in the main town streets. The sculpture ‘The dreamer’ had been selected and we had been invited to attend the opening weekend of the exhibition. During our stay we got to know family of ours, Barb Beuselinck, whose grandfather traveled from Oedelem in Belgium to America to seek his fortune.

Given the fact that the sculpture received a good award, the organization invited me to participate again for this contest. I sent in a drawing illustrating a piece of art that was still to be created. Given the fact that only 55 selections were to be made I didn’t think I had a chance of being selected, but much to my surprise I was selected again.

I very much saw the piece of art as monumental but shipping it to America meant a very high freight cost. If I were to find a place in the surrounding of Sioux Falls to create it, this would make the adventure complete.

A couple of e-mails to some people we had met last year and let’s see what the outcome is.

After a couple of weeks of negotiating a dream came true. The workshop and a place to stay were found. Barb Beuselinck’s husband is Vice President of LifeScape, a non-profit organization for disabled. The premises of this organization would become my fixed workplace and my proposition to have some people, in treatment at the LifeScape facilities, to participate in the project was met enthusiastically.
